06/06/07 - Roanoke parent company buys Smith Mountain Laker.com
From a news release Times-World Corp., owner of The Roanoke Times and Roanoke.com, last week announced the acquisition of the Smith Mountain Laker.com magazine and Web site. Founded six years ago by GO Agency President Micah Gaudio, the Laker is a bi-monthly lifestyle and entertainment magazine distributed throughout the region. Under the agreement, Times-World will also publish the Smith Mountain Laker.com Web site and the annual Laker Map. The move will strengthen Times-World Corp.’s reach in the Lake region, and the expansion will optimize advertisers’ media exposure. Times-World is a subsidiary of Landmark Communications Inc. in Norfolk, which also publishes The Virginian-Pilot and several other Virginia newspapers. “The acquisition makes sense because Times-World is a regional publisher and the GO Agency is a small boutique ad agency that produces one of the largest lake lifestyle magazines in the country,” said Gaudio. Mark Vosskamp, named publisher and general manager of the newly formed Laker Media division, said, “The Laker magazine has a loyal readership and advertising base in a very desirable market. We look forward to working with the Laker team to enhance our service to this community.” For two years, The Roanoke Times has also published The Lake, a weekly tab reaching every household around Smith Mountain Lake. Editor Liz Hock, editor of The Lake, will join Vosskamp, Laker Editor Andie Gibson, Creative Director Brandt Harrell and the rest of the Laker Media team at offices in Hardy. No content, design or distribution changes are scheduled, Vosskamp said.
